Northleach Prison, “The Old Prison” is a rare & unusual place to visit, but definitely worth the trip.
Northleach Gaol also known as Northleach House of Correction is a former prison, with police station and petty sessional court, constructed in 1792 to the designs of William Blackburn. It was altered with additional buildings in the 19th Century and fell out of use by the 1930s, when some blocks were demolished.
The Old Prison has a rather macabre history. It was built in 1792 as a House of Correction for minor convicts in the local vicinity. The reason for these small prisons popping up during the 18th century, was to reduce overcrowding in prisons in the main cities. Despite being built by a philanthropist the original building was equipped with a ‘treadmill’ where convicts would spend their days pounding on the boards. Death was rife within the prison, leading to claims that the building is haunted. Unusual sounds have been heard & orbs seen.
The brutal conditions at Northleach were well known and by the 1840s reports of the hardships were regularly reported in the newspapers.
So feared was the treadmill/treadwheel that one prisoner in 1843, on his way to serve his sentence was so scared, that he thought it better to break his leg under a wagon wheel than face the punishment of the ‘everlasting staircase’.
When a prisoner died after being sentenced to six months of hard labour, the cruel conditions of the prison were severely criticised.
The regime was so harsh, that it was reported in 1843, that when one inmate was required to give evidence in court, he had to be ‘wheeled in’ a wheelchair because he was so weak and unable to stand and in fact, soon after died.
Will we manage to hear the story to one of the former inmates that endured these harsh conditions? Do you dare to join us at what was one of the most gruelling gaols?
