Chirk Mill
There has been a working mill on this site since circa 1300. In the Tudor/Elizabethan period the building was improved and remains of that building can still be seen. The majority of the building now showing was built up, with raised floors and extended in the 1700’s. The cellar and wheel room are still original. There was a gabled Queen Anne house joined onto the mill on the back land. At the end of the last century a three storey extension was erected adjoining the right hand side of the main mill. Originally there was an undershot wheel, which was replaced with an overshot wheel for greater efficiency. This wheel and pit are closed on the left hand side of the building. Over the centuries repair work and alterations were done, sometimes with reclaimed materials e.g. dressed stone from Valley Crucis Abbey and timber from ships. New doors and windows were roughly made or filled in. The right hand side addition was not built sufficiently well enough and was inadequately joined on to the main part of the mill. It was soon realised that the top floor could not withstand the weight of the sacks and the vibration of the milling machinery. The top floor was blocked off, the window filled in and tie bars were put in place through the building to strengthen and stabilise the extension. The current owner’s great uncle and grandfather father took over the milling in Chirk Mill about 1937. The house behind the mill burnt down in the late 1930’s and was left decaying for about 30 years before it was demolished. After the war the mill became mainly a warehouse for sorting, mixing and wholesaling animal foodstuff. The mill became neglected from lack of maintenance. It is now used as a retail business.
