During the early years of the Cold Wat the site was modernised as part of the ROTOR project – a huge elaborate air defence system designed to counter any threat posed by Soviet bombers. During this modernisation the construction of a semi sunk bunker also took place.
In 1958 the site change roles becoming part of the UK Air Traffic control system. It was this period that the site became an RAF centre. Hack green closed in 1966 after it was replaced by RAF Lindholme in South Yorkshire.
The site lay dormant for several years until 1976 when during the height of the Cold War the site was purchased by the Home Office and used as a regional Government HQ RGHQ’s – one of a network of 16 similar sites around the UK. They were designed to enable he government to continue in the event of a nuclear attack.
After the cold War ended in 1992 Hack Greens life as an active military facility had come to an end and the Home Office sold the site to a private buyer. In 1998 the Cold War museum as you see it today was opened.
Since opening to the public in 1998 as a museum staff visitors have regularly experienced strange goings on throughout its rooms and corridors. People have witnessed the full apparition o a man dressed in uniform down the main corridor. Two other apparitions have also been witnessed on this area and members of staff have reported feeling menacing energy in the area, with reports of several people fainting as a result.
In room 9 the telecommunications area people have often witnessed the apparition of a young woman seemingly working at her desk. Several tour groups have also made contact with a male spirit here who is often aggressive. The old phones in the area have been known to ring on their won which is strange considering they are disconnected completely.
The theatre is believed to be the most paranormally active area in the bunker. Here a small boy is often seen and people have reported being touched and pushed by unseen hands. Moans and bangs are also frequently heard. The sudden feeling of illness often overwhelms people hers with one person so affected an ambulance had to be called.
